As the name suggests, "electromyography" measures electrical activity from a muscle or group of muscles. This is a way to measure muscle imbalance, and dysfunction. This abnormal function is often the result of trauma and accompanied by pain. Electrical current in muscles is designed to do two things: 1. cause bones to move, and 2. enable muscles to resist unwanted motions such as gravity, or involuntary movement of the body. Static paraspinal scanning is used to assess muscle tone of the muscles that are closest to the spine from the base of the skull to the bottom of the low back. The readings show action potential of the nerves which control these muscles in a resting state.
